Will Schermerhorn

Many thanks to all the people of Chur. By voting yes at the ballot box, the people of Chur have not only approved the amount needed to stage a major sporting event, but have also sent an important signal for an inclusive society. The Special Olympics World Winter Games 2029 – the world’s largest humanitarian sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities – will bring 2,500 athletes from over 100 nations to Graubünden. Switzerland will experience a major event that will inspire with exciting sports competitions and offer an entertaining supporting program with activities that will radiate into all regions of the country. However, this unique event stands for much more than just sport. It brings people together and makes encounters possible. The preparations for it and the event itself are ideal platforms for inclusion, appreciation and respect.

The “yes” vote in Chur marks the first major milestone.
